Julia Hunt-Nielsen, Soprano

JULIA HUNT NIELSEN, a native of San Francisco, gave her New York debut recital in 2001 at Carnegie Hall in Weill Recital Hall as the first-place winner of the Center for Contemporary Opera's international competition for opera singers.  Her operatic roles have included Mimi in La Boheme, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro,

Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Eurydice in Orpheus and Eurydice and Romilda in Handel's Xerxes. Recently, she appeared as Rose in the West Coast premiere of Elliott Carter's new opera, What Next?, with the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kent Nagano.  She has also appeared in productions and in concert with Festival Opera, Pocket Opera, the San Francisco Opera Guild, the Oakland/East Bay Symphony, CenterStage, the Auburn Symphony and the Lake Tahoe Summer Music Festival; and,  internationally, with the Rome Festival Opera and the AIMS/Graz Orchestra in Austria.

 In addition to her work in opera, Ms. Nielsen has experience in operetta and musical theater, including singing the roles of Maria in West Side Story and Yum-Yum in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado with the Eugene Opera in Oregon. 

Ms. Nielsen is currently a doctoral candidate in voice at Indiana University under Martina Arroyo, having received her Masters Degree there under Margaret Harshaw, and her B.A. from Stanford University.
